Last night, the Hillsborough County Commission voted in favor of giving county residents the opportunity to decide on the proposed 1% transportation surtax in the November election. The decision paves the way for Hillsborough Area Regional Transit to move forward with its plans to improve transportation throughout the County. If residents approve the tax this fall, the money will be used to help fund county-wide transit projects such as an expanded bus and Express Bus Service, the implementation of Neighborhood Circulators, Bus Rapid Transit and Light Rail. HART's Transit Expansion plans are explained in detail on our website at www.goHART.org. Click here for a complete look at the plan.
According to the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the 1% tax would cost a typical household in Hillsborough County approximately $12 a month. Funds would be matched by Federal Transit Administration and State grants. A recent study by Cambridge Systematics, shows an improved transit system in Hillsborough County will help alleviate congestion, bring tens of thousands of jobs through transit construction, drastically increase the number of permanent jobs and support the bay area's current job market by continuing to provide mobility to those who rely on HART as their primary source of transportation; as well as those who wish to utilize rapid transit.
