HART Media Release

HART Executive Director Raymond C. Miller Dies

April 27, 2007 - Tampa, Florida – It is with great sadness that the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority announces the passing today of Executive Director Raymond C. Miller after a prolonged illness.

Mr. Miller took the wheel of HART in January of 2005. Under his guidance, the agency experienced record-breaking ridership, solidified its commitment to improved service, and enhanced its perception in the community. In addition, Mr. Miller presided over an agency that stressed the value of its employees, ushering in a period of labor peace.

Ricardo Roig, Chairperson of the HART Board of Directors, said “Mr. Miller’s dedication and commitment to the agency and its employees was unequalled. I know that everyone joins me in offering our prayers and sympathy to Ray’s family.”

Before coming to HART, Mr. Miller was Executive Director of the Delaware Transit Corporation. Under his direction, that agency was named “Most Outstanding System” for 2003 by the American Public Transportation Association. He held a Masters Degree from the University of Utah with emphasis on both transportation engineering and urban planning, and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Penn State University. Mr. Miller had more than 25 years of transit management experience, working at the Central Ohio Transit Authority and the Utah Transit Authority in addition to Delaware Transit.

Upon being named HART’s Executive Director, Mr. Miller said “My first order of business will be to get out into the community, to meet with local leaders and stakeholders, and determine what they expect from this agency. Transit can, and should, play a greater role in the development of a rapidly growing place like Hillsborough County. I will make it my job to see that we are all working toward a common goal.”

With the new emphasis on transit taking place in the Tampa Bay region, part of Mr. Miller’s legacy will be the building of a healthy HART.

Raymond Miller was 58. He is survived by his wife, Julie.

The mission of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) is to provide public transportation services which are safe, dependable, and cost effective, thereby enhancing the quality of life in our community.
